Fishing with Finnegan to open expanded Celtic series

Sun Journal; Lewiston, Me., Jul 1, 2010

CARTHAGE: New England Celtic Arts will host the Irish band Fishing with Finnegan, four siblings known for their spirited stage shows, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Sunday, July 11.

The group will also perform Monday, July 12, at the North New Portland Community Church. This will be the first of two concerts shared by the two venues this season.

With the completion and renovation of the bell tower at the North New Portland Community Church, pastor Scott Planting and committee decided to open the church to a variety of community events. Planting asked Skye Theatre Director Phill McIntyre about the possibility of presenting Celtic artists in North New Portland as part of the Maine Celtic Tour put on by by New England Celtic Arts. Fishing With Finnegan was selected to be the first group, with The Press Gang to perform on Monday Aug. 9.

The four siblings Ryan, born and raised in northern Rhode Island, have always been inclined toward the arts in general and music in particular. Being home schooled, they found their closest friends in one another, and continue to be a tight-knit family. Formed in the late summer of 2006, Fishing with Finnegan is known for its infectious enthusiasm and family-friendly performances. The band released a self-titled album in 2008.

Show time is at 7 p.m. at both venues. Preshow jam sessions are planned at 6:15 p.m. when audience members are encouraged to bring instruments and jam for a few minutes with the artists.

Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive. The North New Portland Community Church is at 14 Hancock Pond Road in North New Portland. Tickets are $10 at Skye Theatre; $5 or $15 for the family at NNPCC. For tickets, call Skye at 562-4445 or NNPCC at 778-4705.

FWF Nominated for Two 2010 Motif Awards

We're surprised and honored to have been nominated again for the Motif awards. This time we're again up for Best Celtic Act, and also Best Folk Act. The nomination is a big honor itself, and we get to go to the swanky awards night at The Hi-Hat just for that, but if you'd like us to win, we'd love to have your vote! You can throw in for your favorite family band (and some other really great acts) right here. Voting ends on Saturday, 8 May. Thanks much for your support!

Bulletin: We've just heard that Ben has been nominated in Motif's Theater Awards for Best Male Lead, Community Theater, for his role as King Arthur in Swamp Meadow's Quest For The Holy Grail. To vote click here.

Come see us at the Brown Folk Festival on Saturday, 1 May. The free music festival is run by the student body and was a big hit at its inaugral happening last year in spite of torrential rains. This year we've got our fingers crossed for sunshine so that the much-anticipated outdoor stage can be used. BUFF takes place on Lincoln Field, all day long. FWF is on at 4:00 PM. Should we get soaked again, the stage will move indoors to Sayles Hall. Of course, we're hoping it doesn't....
